Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC), headed by caretaker Finance Minister Dr Shamshad Akhtar

The Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC), headed by caretaker Finance Minister Dr Shamshad Akhtar, continued deliberations on Thursday on the restructuring of Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) for finalisation of the revised summary to the cabinet by January 29.

The Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC), led by acting Finance Minister Dr. Shamshad Akhtar, convened on Thursday to further discuss the restructuring of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). The committee is working towards finalizing a revised proposal for submission to the cabinet by January 29.

Dr. Akhtar has been a strong proponent of restructuring the FBR, aiming to widen the tax base and enhance the tax-to-GDP ratio.

This latest round of discussions, held at the Ministry of Finance, focused on overhauling the tax system. The committee comprises interim federal ministers from various departments including privatisation, foreign affairs, commerce, energy, law and justice, and information technology.

The committee is expected to deliver its recommendations on these initiatives at the forthcoming federal cabinet meeting.

Dr. Shamshad Akhtar has also prepared a comprehensive summary for the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) concerning the FBR’s restructuring plan.

Previously, a cabinet meeting led by Interim Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar delved into the specifics of the proposals for the FBR’s restructuring and digital transformation.

Based on the cabinet’s feedback, the interim Prime Minister directed the formation of the IMC, under the leadership of the finance minister, to focus on the proposed reforms for the FBR.

The Cabinet has expressed its appreciation for Dr. Akhtar’s efforts as the interim Finance Minister in boosting the nation’s tax revenues, enhancing the tax-to-GDP ratio, and her in-depth planning for the administrative reformation of the FBR.
